Our Volunteer Managers' Forum is open to anyone involved in the recruitment, management, leadership or supervision of volunteers in Fife, whether as a staff or volunteer.

Following on the theme of volunteer recruitment that we've explored at the last few forums, this time our attention will be on volunteers with convictions, disclosure and risk management - come with questions, examples and an open mind. Remember, although around a third of men and one in 10 women in the UK have a criminal record, most are for minor crimes and result in non-custodial sentences.  Could you be missing out on potential volunteers because of rejecting people in this group?

At the forum, we have Wendy Beith, Compliance and Training officer with Volunteer Scotland coming to speak to us about this issue. She will share with us their recruiting with convictions policy, and self-disclosure, along with how to risk assess any vetting information disclosed either by self-disclosure or on PVGs. This will include the rules around what conviction information you can ask about.

There is often a stigma attached to having a criminal record, meaning people with convictions can be excluded from society as a result. This exclusion, and subsequent reoffending, can be reduced through volunteering and other opportunities, helping to promote a sense of societal and community investment.

After the speaker and discussion, we'll have our usual updates about what's happening in the sector, useful information and important dates, with space share your news too. We'll also have a quick look at Volunteers' Week too - the first of June will be here sooner than we think!

Our forums are a great way to meet other people doing a similar role to you and reduce any sense of isolation you may have. The also offer the chance to network (formally and informally), discuss issues you may have, and ask questions of the guest speaker and FVA staff in attendance.

We look forward to seeing you there.
