Human Appeal has conducted research on the Diversity In UK Volunteering.

The key finding is that BAME people volunteer more than non-BAME people, especially in healthcare, childcare, and education. Human Appeal did discover, however, that BAME people are more likely to be negatively affected by the cost-of-living crisis and for this to impact on their volunteering.

Other key statistics in the report include:

    • The National Council of Volunteers (NCVO) launched its Time Well Spent report in June 2023 which identified that 40% of organisations surveyed noted a decline in the number of hours and the number of volunteers giving their time to organisations
    • Just 8% of all UK volunteers had their expenses reimbursed by the organisation they volunteered with
    • 36% of BAME volunteers stated they now volunteer more as a result of the cost-of-living crisis, compared to 23% non-BAME
    • 48% of BAME respondents said they felt a greater sense of community as a result of volunteering
