  • Volunteer Scotland Community Learning and Development Consultation Response

    Created: 22/03/2024
    News/Events Category: Volunteering

The results from Volunteer Scotland's independent review of community learning and development has been published.

Volunteering has an important role in the successful delivery of Community Learning and Development (CLD) services in Scotland. Thousands of volunteers support the learning and development of others through CLD services, and participation in volunteering is often a learning activity in and of itself.

There has been a worrying trend in CLD whereby volunteers are being engaged to make up for reductions in paid staff and shortfalls in funding. This is unsustainable for the future of CLD services, as well as having a negative impact on the quality of volunteer experiences.

In the response, Volunteer Scotland make a range of recommendations for ensuring that future volunteer involvement in CLD is sustainable and is aligned with other government ambitions around the wider reform of the Scottish skills landscape and the further devolution of power to communities.
