The Scottish Household Survey (SHS) is an annual survey which has been carried out since 1999. It collects data on a wide range of topics using face-to-face, in-home interviewing. This includes annual questions about formal volunteering, and from 2018, biennial questions about informal volunteering. It is the most authoritative data source on volunteering in Scotland with a sample size of 9,000-10,000 adults aged 16+.

    Highlights from the survey include:

    • The adult total volunteering participation rate in Scotland decreased from 48% in 2018 to 46% in 2022
    • The adult formal volunteering participation rate was 22% in 2022, down from 26% in 2019
    • Volunteering participation rates decreased for all ages, particularly those aged 16-59
    • Volunteering participation rates for men decreased by 3%, with a 6% decrease for women
    • Local community and neighbourhood groups were the most common type of formal volunteering, involving 27% of volunteers
