K107FM, the award winning community radio station is set to celebrate a decade of broadcasting to Kirkcaldy and the surrounding area at the end of March.

The Kirkcaldy-based station remains the only OFCOM licenced community station within Fife, with the licence beginning on 31 March 2014.

The station, set up by founders Colin Johnston, John Murray and Graeme Logan began life at 23 Kirk Wynd, in the Fife Free Press building, before moving to its current home in New Volunteer House, Kirkcaldy. There is office space and two broadcast studios enabling live shows, pre-recorded content and training, with further options for awareness, engagement, and fundraising events within its Community Space within the Mercat Shopping Centre.

Graeme Logan remains within the station as a Trustee, with other volunteers also proud to have been with the station for the full 10 years, such as current Chairperson, Wilf Parkinson. Others from the community have been involved, with the station giving a platform, and often the first exposure to media interviews to countless local bands, charities and organisations over the past decade. The station has also been present within the community covering local events and providing live broadcasts of the likes of the Kirkcaldy Parks Running Festival and Kirkcaldy’s Christmas Spotlights in recent years.

In recent years, this community support and outreach has seen the station nominated for, and winning multiple awards from within the radio industry and the annual Community Radio awards, to national Scotland Prestige awards, to third sector awards with the Fife Voluntary Action - Volunteering and Voluntary Sector Awards 2023. Recognition has also expanded to the local business community with the stations first Fife Chamber of Commerce Fife Business Awards nomination in 2023, followed by the recent announcement of two nominations for the forthcoming awards in 2024.

The work of K107FM volunteers has also been recognised via parliamentary and Early Day Motions by both local MP’s and MSP’s over the past 10 years.

Kirkcaldy Community Radio is a registered charity, and operates as a not-for-profit organisation, its volunteer led broadcasting giving opportunities to those across Fife. Commercial activities, fundraising and volunteer recruitment efforts remain as a key effort to continue the service.

The impact of COVID, cost of living crisis and challenges to local independent local businesses have impacted on advertising revenue, however the station has increased its ways of working with local and national stakeholders to find opportunities beyond basic radio advertising and continues to explore these alongside donation, grant and fundraising efforts to ensure the service remains sustainable.

A station spokesperson stated “We’re delighted to reach 10 years of broadcasting, and want to pay tribute to all who have been involved with, and supported the station over the past decade. The media landscape has changed in that time, the ability to hear local voices and highlight local businesses, events, issues and news is vital to our community, but is dependent on the tireless dedication of our volunteers and the organisations that partner with us. As the station continues to develop we would love more people to be involved and further reflect the communities we serve!”

K107FM are also pleased to share that industry regulator Ofcom, has renewed its broadcast Licence for a further five years. It means we'll be able to continue to deliver our award-winning local radio service until at least March 2029.
