Welfare Reform and the impact on Mental Health - Fife Employment Access Trust
Created: 25/02/2015The Welfare Reform Act 2012 came into effect on 1 April 2013 and began the UK Government's biggest overhaul of the benefits system for very many years.
The government justified these reforms on the grounds that it would simplify the benefits system, make it less costly to administer and to increase incentives to seek work. However, concerns have been raised about the impact of these welfare reforms on people with mental health problems. For example over 50% of people subject to Work Capability Assessment (due the transition from Incapacity Benefit to Employment and Support Allowance) have a mental health problem as a primary condition. These issues will be directly addressed in this free workshop.
In the first part of the workshop, through participation in a quiz, the 'common sense' and myths surrounding mental health illness will be exposed. This will incorporate an overview of the symptoms of the prevalent mental health illnesses, their causes and paths to recovery. In the second part, the workshop will consider some of the evidence on how the current welfare reforms are impacting on those suffering from mental health problems in Scotland.
