Complying with the New Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)
Created: 03/05/2018The new data protection regulations will take effect on 25 May 2018 - just days away! Every third sector organisation will need to take some action to ensure compliance before 25 May.
Third sector organisations are not exempt from complying and are not immune to the potentially huge fines (millions of pounds) for a serious breach (which could be as a result of insufficient IT security, staff/volunteer training or lack of evidence to show compliance, to name just a few). Furthermore, every organisation that employs staff and/or engages volunteers will need to take some particular action before 25 May to ensure you have a lawful justification for processing personal data of your employees!
There will no leeway or gentle introduction - the law, in full, takes effect from 25 May 2018 and organisations could start receiving subject access requests immediately.
This training session is predominantly a talk/presentation with some opportunities to ask questions during the presentation, and then a further opportunity at the end. The session looks at what's new compared to current data protection law, the key implications, technological risks and considerations and some suggested steps to take to ensure compliance.
This is a complex area and the presenters will cover a lot of ground in the session - no previous knowledge or expertise is needed, but the session is not intended to make you an expert on GDPR, it has been designed for a third sector audience to make them aware of the many considerations and risks. Delegates will receive a copy of the slides alongside a data audit handout, after the event, on submission of basic evaluation feedback (this is done online and will take around a minute).
The session will be delivered by Frances McAulay, a specialist employment lawyer, from Square Peg HR and Kenny Murphy, CEO of Fife Voluntary Action who, in a previous career in the private sector, has advised on data protection and information security across all sectors.
Kenny and Frances have delivered this session to more than 200 people so far with excellent feedback - with many specifically noting the plain language used and helpfulness of the trainers to answer questions.
