Elder Abuse Recovery Project (Fife) opens for referrals

News/Events Category: General NewsAction on Elder Abuse Scotland's unique new Elder Abuse Recovery Project (Fife) is now ready to start accepting clients, and they would be grateful for your help in encouraging those you feel may benefit from this service to contact them. The project supports older people to recover from the harm or abuse they have experienced, and develop the skills and confidence to stay safe and regain independence. Harm or abuse might include physical, financial, psychological, sexual or neglect.
Action on Elder Abuse use trained 'peer' volunteers to provide emotional support, encouragement and friendship in an informal and non-threatening environment. While the project includes an element of befriending, it goes much further by focusing on recovery, building resilience and self-recovery, and enabling older people to regain their independence and re-integrate into their local community. It therefore includes defined milestones to allow clients to move on and no longer require the support of the volunteer.
Benefits of participation are likely to include:
- an improvement in older people's health and well-being, and recovery from the emotional and psychological effects of abuse
- gaining (or regaining) independence, confidence and social support networks
- gaining the tools and capabilities to become more resilient and protect themselves in the future
- a reduction in reliance on health and social care services
They have been working in partnership with Fife Council and Police Scotland to develop the project, and it's funded as a one-year pilot by the Big Lottery Fund and the Robertson Trust.
