  • Funding for group visits to Permaculture sites across Scotland

    Created: 12/10/2016
    News/Events Category: Funding and Finance

Beth Ramsay is the new Outreach Worker for Permaculture Scotland and will be providing outreach support for the project “ ScotLAND Phase 2: Engaging hard to reach communities”. ScotLand is currently running a Group Visit Scheme.

    What is ScotLAND?

ScotLAND is a Scotland-wide network supporting and creating permaculture Learning And Network Demonstration (LAND) Centres. The aim of ScotLAND is to demonstrate practical examples of permaculture design in various different places, micro-climates, and cultures throughout Scotland. These include both urban and rural home gardens, community gardens, public spaces, allotments, smallholdings and farms. For more info visit: www.scotland.permaculture.org.uk

    Group Visit Scheme

As part of ScotLAND Beth is excited to announce that they currently have funding to develop a Group Visit Scheme. The scheme provides opportunities for learning about permaculture and engaging in healthy activities by visiting a ScotLAND Centre. You can find out about the ScotLAND Centres here, in Fife the Centre is West Braes - a productive family fruit and vegetable garden using Permaculture design principles to cope with the strong winds and low rainfall of the Scottish east coast.

The host Centre will give a tour of their project and can provide a drink and snack (potentially a pot of soup if at lunch-time). If your group and host are able there may be an opportunity for you to do some physical task on site (e.g. to build a herb spiral, turn the compost, feed the ducks etc, please discuss this with your host) .

    How it works

Could you get together a group of 12 people to visit a permaculture site?

    1. Have a look at our list of Centres here, choose one that you'd like to visit, or make a shortlist of ones that are of interest.
    2. Get in touch with Beth who can give you more information about the different Centres if you have any questions (or find out the answers for you!). Beth will then put you directly in touch with the Centre so you can arrange a date for your group visit and to make sure that the exchange will meet your needs (e.g. if you want a physical activity or not etc).
    3. Gather a group of 12 people minimum who are interested in going on the visit. This group should be composed of people who might not ordinarily have the opportunity to visit a permaculture project. For example, this might be due to rural isolation or living in the inner city. They just need you to be able to explain this to them briefly.
    4. Beth's role is to introduce you to the Centre, ensure your group of 12 is primarily made up of people who are in some way usually “hard to reach”, to make sure your travel expenses are covered, and the host Centre is paid.
    5. Each group will be allocated £150 to cover travel expenses. (This might be to cover the costs of a mini-bus hire or bus tickets for example).
    6. During your visit to the Centre you will need to sign an attendance form, take a few photos on site, and collect some feedback from your group (this can be orally recorded, it doesn't have to be a form). All Centres have adequate facilities, e.g toilets and tea making facilities. Please get in touch if you have any questions regarding the accessibility of particular sites.
