The Winners - Fife's Volunteering and Voluntary Sector Awards 2017

Volunteers and voluntary organisations from across Fife were honoured on 07 June at Fife Voluntary Action’s annual Awards Ceremony.
Over 200 people attended the event at the Carnegie Conference Centre, Dunfermline, which was hosted by Dave Connor and Vanessa Motion from Kingdom FM’s Breakfast Show. The Awards are the biggest event of its kind in Fife.
Over the course of the evening awards in 16 separate categories were presented to hardworking people and organisations from all corners of the Kingdom. The Award winners were chosen by an independent judging panel from hundreds of nominations received.
This year’s Volunteer of the Year award went to Allen Armstrong who co-founded and volunteers with CLEAR Buckhaven. Allen has helped to drive CLEAR Buckhaven over the last 10 years, from inception as a litter picking group to the anchor organisation that has been transforming the local area. He has been key in supporting the growth of CLEAR and its role in one of Fife's most deprived areas.
Other awards included Young Volunteer of the Year which was given to Charlotte Liddell who volunteers with Fife Gingerbread. Charlotte has come far, still just only 20 years old, a parent with two young sons and also kinship carer for her sister, her confidence and self-esteem grew following support from Fife Gingerbread’s services leading her to become a volunteer, a Community Food Champion and a community activist and is currently studying a PDA in Youth Work.
Youth 1st received the Organisation of the Year award. Youth 1st supports approximately 5,000 young people attending over 150 different youth groups and organisations. Most of their member groups are organised and run by volunteers. There are 775 youth workers and volunteers in their membership. An incredible 1,300 people take part in their programmed activities each year.
The award for an organisation that reduced inequalities went to Glenrothes Foodbank. They have provided food to over 2,000 adults and 1,000 children in the last year alone.
Long service awards were also handed out to the many volunteers who have put in years and decades of service to helping to strengthen communities in Fife. The longest serving volunteer was an incredible 50 years for Irene Pakora.
There were also special Saltire Awards for young people who have volunteered for well over 200 hours.
The audience were also entertained by The Learning Differently Theatre who put on a performance worthy of the Award they were to go to win later in the evening.
Kenny Murphy, Chief Executive Officer, said: “Ever year we are taken aback by the tremendous and often life-changing efforts volunteers and voluntary organisations across Fife make on a daily basis.
“This event is a chance to highlight that fantastic work, celebrate these incredible achievements and say a big thank you on behalf of the people and communities of Fife.”
