News/Events Category: ConsultationsThe Scottish Government has proposed a new law- the Visitor Levy (Scotland) Bill- that would allow local authorities to introduce an additional charge when someone pays for overnight accommodation.
If you've travelled abroad, you may have seen similar charges being made when checking into a hotel - sometimes called a Tourist Tax or an Occupancy Tax. The Bill proposes to allow local authorities to charge a percentage of the cost of accommodation and to use the monies earned to fund improvements to the visitor economy (such as to facilities or services substantially used by tourists).
A consultation has been launched to listen to the views of anyone interested. The consultation closes on 01 September 2023.
