    The Ecology Centre is open for referrals now for the Forest School Qualification (FOLA 4) for placements starting in January 2024.

    The Centre offers placements for the Forest School Qualification as part of a jointly funded project with Fife Council Opportunities Fife partnership and Scottish Government.

    The course encourages improved skills in education, estate and woodland management and more, to help participant develop an increased confidence and build self-esteem in a nature setting.  

    Aims include:

    • Improved teamwork
    • Knowledge of the woodland environment
    • Ecology
    • Sustainability
    • Conservation
    • Restoration of the Forth
    • Safe working practices
    • Improved mental health and wellbeing
    • Developing key skills

    The course is open to people over the age of 16. 

    • Benefit from a volunteer placement to learn outdoor estate/woodland management/gardening skills
    • Benefit from gaining an SCQF FOLA 4 (Forest and Outdoor Learning Award)
    • Looking to overcome barriers to work
    • Benefit from a supportive environment to move forward in life and achieve goals

    The Ecology Centre accepts referrals from organisations and self/family referrals for age 16+.

    Duration

    • FOLA 4 Courses are eight week blocks, each session 2-3 hours per week, groups of 10
    • Volunteer placements are on average 37 hours long with flexibility on how this is structured

    How it works:

    • There is an initial meeting with the project case manager which includes person-centred planning, goal setting and placement design
    • Continuous support is offered throughout from the case manager and Ecology Centre delivery staff
    • At the end of the placement the team supports and signposts clients for their next steps
