During the 2020-2021 time period, 21% of children referred to a Children's Report in Scotland had domestic abuse as the primary concern. In Fife this was 9%.

Just as every child's experience of domestic abuse is different, every child will be affected differently. Factors like age, stage, personality, and how they're seen by the abusing and non-abusing parent will all impact on this. The impact of domestic abuse on a child should be understood as a consequence of the perpetrator choosing to abuse rather than the non-abusing parent/carer's failure to protect.

    About the training

Participants will explore the complexities of domestic abuse and the steps involved in keeping children and young people safe from harm and recognising the impact of perpetrator's coercive behaviour on adult and child victims. Participants will be briefly introduced to the Safe & Together approach, which focuses on harm to children, supporting the non-abusing parent, and holding the perpetrator to account. It is designed to support and enhance practice alongside existing child protecting guidelines and GIRFEC (getting it right for every child) obligations.
